Cibolo Creek doesn’t lend itself to large watercraft‚ but if you’re behind the wheel of a paddleboat‚ the water’s just fine.
Since 2004‚ Zach and Julie Taylor have owned and operated River Road Paddleboats‚ allowing weekend boaters the opportunity to cruise up and down the creek for the mile or so between a dam and a low bridge. The obstacles allow for a controlled environment‚ and the Taylor’s 12 boats give plenty of people the opportunity to relax on the water.
“We run the boats on the weekends‚ weather permitting‚ from around 11
a.m. to dark‚” Zach Taylor says. “We only bring out a few at a time‚ but the rest are stored right around the corner‚ so if we need to put more in the water‚ we can do it pretty quickly.”
The paddleboats have proven popular for birthday parties‚ Scout troops and other organizations. Originally made for ocean use‚ each features an awning and drink holders and can accommodate two adults and two children‚ or any combination of people up to 850 pounds‚ Taylor says.
“They’re pontoons‚ so there’s less boat in the water‚ and the bearings are water-lubricated and eco-friendly‚” Taylor says. “People really enjoy going out in them.”
And because the boats are easy to get in and out of the water‚ the Taylors can transport them to other waterways as the need arises.
“If somebody calls and wants them for a party‚ any day of the week‚ we can put that together‚” Taylor says. “We’re a mobile business. Just take us to the water.”
