Hungry Horse Restaurant Serves Food and the Community

boerne, food, hungry horse restaurant,

Steve Artale knows his limitations. “I’m not that great of a cook, but I know what tastes good,” says the owner of Hungry Horse Restaurant.

Artale has put that simple philosophy to work for 25 years at his dining establishment, Hungry Horse Restaurant. Upon his discharge from the military, he opened his first of two restaurants in San Antonio. He later sold those to focus his efforts in Boerne, where he was already raising his family.

The restaurant’s cooks serve homestyle fare, with chicken-fried steak, liver and onions, burgers, salads and seafood among the popular choices. The recipes are a combination of family secrets and hit-and-miss efforts through years in food service.

In September 2008, Artale celebrated 25 years in business with an anniversary party. Money raised was earmarked for the Boerne Public Library Fund. Philanthropy comes easy, he says.

“When you’re allowed to give back to the community, it makes you want to go to work every day,” Artale says.

Hungry Horse Restaurant, located at 109 S. Saunders St., is open from 11 a.m.-9 p.m., seven days a week.
